Check This Out: The Dark Knight: Batman Crashes the Black Masquerade

We just finished reading "The Dark Knight: Batman Crashes the Black Masquerade" and we loved it!

The Plot: BRUCE WAYNE’S masquerade ball for charity is crashed by none other than the BLACK MASK. He and FALSE FACE SOCIETY members rob the guests, steal the charitable donations, and then kidnap COMMISSIONER GORDON. Without the Commissioner's help, the DARK KNIGHT is left to take on the entire criminal underworld on his own.

The Takeaway: "The Dark Knight: Batman Crashes the Black Masquerade" is another fun BATMAN story published by Stone Arch Books. Much like "The Dark Knight: Batman Vs. The Cat Commander" this story is full of excitement, simple to read, and even included a Biography of the villain and a Glossary at the end to assist unfamiliar or young readers so they could enjoy the book even more. Filled with large text and fantastic pictures, this is another book which packs a lot of "POW!" for its audience.

Check This Out: The Dark Knight: Batman Vs. The Cat Commander

So we just finished reading "The Dark Knight: Batman Vs. The Cat Commander" and I gotta say...it was AWESOME! What a fun story!

The Plot: SOMEONE has stolen an ancient flute that calls all of GOTHAM CITY'S cats to their command. When BATMAN swoops in to stop the kitty kidnapper, he’s overwhelmed by hundreds of cross cats under the CAT COMMANDER'S command! Will BATMAN save the day?! Or has the CAT COMMANDER committed the PURRFECT crime?!

The Takeaway: This was a fun story, simple to read, and even included a Biography of the villain and a Glossary at the end to assist unfamiliar or young readers so they could enjoy the book even more. Filled with large text and fantastic pictures, this book packs a lot of "POW!" for its audience.

Check This Out: Batman/The Flash: The Button

Just finished reading "Batman/The Flash: The Button" and it was absolutely INCREDIBLE!

The Plot: The road to DOOMSDAY CLOCK begins here! BATMAN/THE FLASH: THE BUTTON is the prelude to this epic story. BATMAN has found a mystery he can't even begin to solve - a strange, bloodstained smiley-face button embedded in the BATCAVE wall. All analysis suggests this button is NOT of this universe! So where did it come from? Who left it there? Only THE FLASH can help answer these questions! But wait, the button is not all BATMAN and THE FLASH have to deal with. Because when THE FLASH is around sure to follow is THE REVERSE-FLASH! BATMAN and THE FLASH must battle their way through a parallel world while trying to solve this strange mystery, an alternate timeline both BRUCE and BARRY could find hard to resist. WALLY WEST warned THE FLASH of an unseen force influencing our world - and the button could be the key to finding it.

The Takeaway: This prelude to DOOMSDAY CLOCK absolutely stands on its own as an EPIC story! I've never really given much thought before to the team-up of BATMAN and THE FLASH but these two have an INCREDIBLE dynamic. And it only makes sense, between the deaths of BRUCE WAYNE'S parents and BARRY ALLEN'S mother? These two superheroes can relate to each other on the deepest levels. Not to mention both BRUCE WAYNE'S and BARRY ALLEN'S abilities to analyze crime scenes on levels matched by no other. After this story, I'm definitely looking forward to MORE team-ups between BATMAN and THE FLASH!

Check This Out: Batman: Arkham Asylum

Just read "Batman: Arkham Asylum" and...it was cool.

The Plot: The inmates of Arkham Asylum have taken over Gotham's detention center for the criminally insane on April Fool's Day, demanding BATMAN in exchange for their hostages. Accepting their demented challenge, BATMAN is forced to endure the personal hells of the JOKER, SCARECROW, POISON IVY, TWO-FACE and many other sworn enemies in order to save the innocents and retake the prison. During his run through this absurd gauntlet, the DARK KNIGHT must face down both his most dangerous foes and his inner demons. This is the critically acclaimed BATMAN story that helped launch the U.S. careers of GRANT MORRISON and DAVE McKEAN.

The Takeaway: Overall this was an incredible story. Definitely had some bumps along the way though. I had to push through some of the fonts and dialect - more than once I found myself thinking "so-and-so wouldn't say or react like that!" But if you can push through some of the styling and get past some of the dialect, "Batman: Arkham Asylum" really was a great and significant story.

Check This Out: Batman: The Killing Joke

So I finally just read "Batman: The Killing Joke" and man...IT. DOES. NOT. DISAPPOINT! After all these years it still holds up as one of the most incredible stories out there!

The Plot: "All it takes is just one bad day..." Freed once again from Arkham Asylum, the JOKER sets out to prove all it takes is "one bad day" for any sane person to spiral down the pit of madness...and he's chosen COMMISSIONER GORDON as his "test subject" to prove it!

The Takeaway: This is an incredible story masterfully written by ALAN MOORE and beautifully illustrated by BRIAN BOLLAND. It's an absolute MUST-HAVE for any ALAN MOORE or BATMAN fan out there. The story flashes between the present and the JOKER'S origins...well...at least a VERSION of the JOKER'S origin. Can BATMAN stop the JOKER in time? Or is this the first day of the rest of COMMISSIONER GORDON'S spiral into MADNESS??

Check This Out: Anthony Bourdain's Hungry Ghosts

So I just read "Anthony Bourdain's Hungry Ghosts" and...I gotta be honest...I thought it was...ok.

The Plot: Hungry Ghosts is cooked up by the best selling author and veteran chef, ANTHONY BOURDAIN (Kitchen Confidential, Emmy-Award winning TV star of Parts Unknown) and acclaimed novelist JOEL ROSE (Kill, Kill, Faster, Faster) back again from their New York Times #1 best seller, Get Jiro!.

Featuring all-new original recipes prepared by BOURDAIN, plus a yellow ribbon bookmark , and a guide to the ghostly legendary spirits behind these horrifying tales. This horror anthology is sure to please--and scare!

On a dark, haunted night, a Russian Oligarch dares a circle of international chefs to play the samurai game of 100 Candles--where each storyteller tells a terrifying tale of ghosts, demons and unspeakable beings--and prays to survive the challenge.

Inspired by the Japanese Edo period game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, Hungry Ghosts reimagines the classic stories of yokai, yorei, and obake, all tainted with the common thread of food.

Including stellar artists SEBASTIAN CABROL, VANESA DEL REY, FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA, IRENE KOH, LEO MANCO, ALBERTO PONTICELLI, PAUL POPE, and MATEUS SANTOLOUCO, as well as amazing color by JOSE VILLARRUBIA, and a drop-dead cover by PAUL POPE.

The Takeaway: This mini-series, to me, seemed to have a lot of potential. Who WOULDN'T love a collection of ghostly tales based on legendary spirits intertwined in a game of Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, or 100 Candles, featuring a circle of chefs gathered to outscare each other?! It sounded REALLY cool--and spooky, too! But, for myself, I found it to just be more vulgar and grotesque than much of anything else. I mean, the concept is there. The stories are there. The artwork is DEFINITELY there... I guess I was just hoping for a bit more on the execution. All in all, this was still a VERY cool read. If you come into it for the lore and get past the disgust, I think this is a great collection of old tales with a semi-modern twist.

Check This Out: We3

Just read "We3" and man...WOW! This was an emotional one for me. I had no idea when I picked it up. And yes, I cried.

The Plot: Writer Grant Morrison and artist Frank Quitely deliver the emotional journey of WE3 - three house pets weaponized for lethal combat by the government - as they search for "home" and ward off the shadowy agency that created them.

With nervous systems amplified to match their terrifying mechanical exoskeletons, the members of Animal Weapon 3 (WE3) have the firepower of a battalion between them. But they are just the program's prototypes, and now that their testing is complete, they're slated to be permanently "decommissioned," causing them to seize their one chance to make a desperate run for freedom. Relentlessly pursued by their makers, the WE3 team must navigate a frightening and confusing world where their instincts and heightened abilities make them as much a threat as those hunting them - but a world, nonetheless, in which somewhere there is something called "home."

The Takeaway: We3 is a beautifully written story about three weaponized stolen pets. The covers to each of the comics in this short series really hit hard - seeing each pet in their home, their family obviously trying to find them... Man...my pets are my life. If you love animals, and you think you can take it, definitely check this one out - then go hug your pet.

Check This Out: Vampirella vs. Dracula

Here's a Halloween treat for y'all! Just read "Vampirella vs. Dracula" and it was fantastic!

The Plot: Spinning out of ALAN MOORE'S retelling of the ageless horror classic, DRACULA has come to America to play out his timeless narrative in this brave, New World. Only he didn't realize ANOTHER vampire already beat him to it. Drawn to one another across continents and centuries by a mysterious force, both VAMPIRELLA and BRAM STOKER'S immortal monster find themselves sucked into a time-tossed epic of love, hate, death, and damnation. But can an epic built for one vampire possibly hold them both?

The Takeaway: So of course the big draw here is that it's VAMPIRELLA versus DRACULA! Which is really cool stuff. The artwork is amazing. The story itself IS really cool I think, but it DOES get a bit confusing realizing what era they're in from time to time. If you're a fan of BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA then I say give it a shot.

So I read "Haunted Mansion" and I gotta say...it was a FUN read!

The Plot: Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion - enter if you dare! You might think that no one lives in this elegant house on the hill...but then where's that creepy organ music coming from? Are its iron gates meant to keep people out...or keep something in? Get ready to meet the 999 spooks of the Haunted Mansion. But be warned, they're looking for the 1000th! Legendary ghouls like Madame Leota, the Hatbox ghost, Constance the Bride and the Hitchhiking Ghosts lie in wait and could appear at any moment. But poor Danny is trapped inside and just wants to escape the foreboding abode - is there anyone he can trust to help him? Marvel brings the chilling fan-favorite Haunted Mansion attraction to (after) life in the latest spine-tingling Disney Kingdoms adventure!

The Takeaway: This was a fun story which totally brought me back to Disney's "Haunted Mansion" attraction. Geared toward a younger audience, this well written and beautifully illustrated series totally included all the things I remembered from the Disney ride - from dancing ghosts and funny paintings to Madame Leota and the mysteries of the mansion. If you're looking for a light and enjoyable read definitely pick this one up!
